Zell am See and Saalbach-Hinterglemm: One of Europe’s largest ski areas

Zell am See Xpress

The new and exciting ZellamseeXpress gondola is now open, connecting two of Austria’s best ski resorts.

With constant investment and advancements in ski lifts, snow-making facilities, and mountain infrastructure, Austria’s ski regions continue to become bigger and better. Popular resorts are connecting their mountains via new lifts and combined ski passes, making it even easier for skiers to explore different valleys and villages. Now, resorts across the country are competing for the prime spot of the ‘largest skiable area’ in Europe, overtaking many of the top French and Swiss resorts.

A modern new gondola, the ZellamseeXpress, was officially opened in Viehhofen in December 2019. This exciting link connects Saalbach to Zell am See, via the beautiful village of Viehhofen. Skiers in Saalbach can now zip down the treelined 68 piste to Viehhofen, where they can then hop into the sleek new ZellamseeXpress gondola. The gondola whisks skiers up to the Schmittenhöhe in Zell am See, where the whole family can enjoy the beautifully groomed pistes.

Heading back from Zell am See is also easy. Skiers head down Zell’s groomed pistes to Viehhofen and then hop on a free 8-minute bus to Saalbach.

This new ski area is all under the Ski Alpin Card which enables skiers to enjoy 408km of pistes, free-riding tracks and 121 ski lifts. The ski card gives access to three top resorts in the area, including the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier in Kaprun. These exciting expansions have now made the ski region one of Europe’s largest, further increasing the appeal for property buyers in the area, who will now have access to more pistes than ever before.

Excitingly, there is also talk about another new ski lift in the town of Viehhofen, further connecting the village to the Saalbach Hinterglemm Ski Circus, and eliminating the need for a quick bus ride. This new ski lift is expected to complete by winter 2022. Property buyers watch this space!
